Zimbabwean filmmaker and author Tsitsi Dangarembga

Zimbabwean filmmaker and author Tsitsi Dangarembga was born in Bulawayo, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), on 4 February 1959, but spent part of her childhood in England. She began her education in England, but later attended Hartzell High School, a missionary school in the Rhodesian town of Umtali (now Mutare). She later studied medicine at Cambridge University, where she experienced racism and isolation. Dangarembga left Cambridge and returned to Zimbabwe a few months before the country officially declared its independence. She studied psychology at the University of Zimbabwe while working for two years as a copywriter at a marketing agency. This early writing experience gave her an avenue for expression. In this piece of Applied Numerology Research which links with the intensely analytical work we’re doing around Numerology For Women, we take you deep inside her life and world.

Let’s get to better understand Tsitsi Dangaremba

At the age of 25, she had her first taste of success with her novel Nervous Conditions, published in 1988. It was the first novel in English by a black woman from Zimbabwe. The novel won the African section of the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize in 1989 and is considered one of the twelve best African novels ever written. In May, 2018, the BBC named Nervous Conditions as one of the top 100 books that have shaped the world. Her novel was 66th book on the list.

Asked about her subsequent prose drought, she explained: “There have been two major reasons for my not having worked on prose since Nervous Conditions: firstly, the novel was published only after I had turned to film as a medium; secondly, Virginia Woolf’s shrewd observation that a woman needs £500 and a room of her own in order to write is entirely valid. Incidentally, I am moving and hope that, for the first time since Nervous Conditions, I shall have a room of my own. I’ll try to ignore the bit about £500.”

Dangarembga returned to Zimbabwe with her family in 2000 to work at Nuyerai Films, the film production company she founded in Harare. She is also the executive director of Women Filmmakers of Zimbabwe and is the founding director of the Women’s Film Festival of Harare. She founded the International Images Film Festival in 2002 in response to the proliferation of beauty contests at that time, to provide diverse narratives by and about women.

In May 2016, Dangarembga was selected by the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center for their 2015 Artists in Residency Programme. In August 2019 she was announced as a finalist for the 2019 St. Francis College Literary Prize, a biennial award recognizing outstanding fiction by writers in the middle stages of their careers.

Nervous Conditions published in 1988

Nervous Conditions is a non-fiction book that deals with the themes of poverty, the challenges faced by women trying to achieve their aims in life and the struggles they have to undertake to be able to succeed. The main protagonist of the novel is Tambu, who is given a chance to go for higher education after the death of her older brother Nhamo.

Nhamo was the only male in the entire family and therefore he was always given the most attention as Jeremiah (their dad) expected that he would bring them out of the squalor they were living in. However, due to exposure to western culture he shuns his own culture and starts to distance himself from the family. Soon after his death, this opportunity is given to Tambu to go and achieve her dreams, however her mother Ma Shingayi is afraid of the change that may happen to Tambu due to a similar influence by western culture.

Tambu goes along with Babamukuru (her wealthy and learned uncle) for higher studies in England. Babamukuru was always given respect and was looked upon with awe as he could achieve success through persistance and hard work. As Tambu goes on to live with Babamukuru, many other secrets and true colours of Babamukuru is revealed. In her journey to better her condition through education she finds out shocking truths in the Babamukuru’s household. It is not what seemed like from a distance and the lives of Maiguru and Nyasha were not what it should have been like.

This book introduces us to many numerous struggles that women experience. This journey of Tambu helps us view society from a different perspective and the fact that everything is achievable is what is portrayed throught this marvellous work by Tsitsi Dangarembga. It surely is a must-read book…

This Mournable Body published in 2018

A searing novel about the obstacles facing women in Zimbabwe, by one of the country’s most notable authors. Anxious about her prospects after leaving a stagnant job, Tambudzai finds herself living in a run-down youth hostel in downtown Harare. For reasons that include her grim financial prospects and her age, she moves to a widow’s boarding house and eventually finds work as a biology teacher. But at every turn in her attempt to make a life for herself, she is faced with a fresh humiliation, until the painful contrast between the future she imagined and her daily reality ultimately drives her to a breaking point. In This Mournable Body, Tsitsi Dangarembga returns to the protagonist of her acclaimed first novel, Nervous Conditions, to examine how the hope and potential of a young girl and a fledgling nation can sour over time and become a bitter and floundering struggle for survival. As a last resort, Tambudzai takes an ecotourism job that forces her to return to her parents’ impoverished homestead. It is this homecoming, in Dangarembga’s tense and psychologically charged novel, that culminates in an act of betrayal, revealing just how toxic the combination of colonialism and capitalism can be. Vanity Fair described the book by Tsitsi Dangarembga as “The novel explores how race, gender, class, and age are at play in Zimbabwe, and the overwhelming strength of these forces in the face of even the most optimistic and ambitious women.”

365 Pin Code Birth Chart of Tsitsi Dangarembga born 04.02.1959

Pause for a moment and think… Zimbabwean filmmaker and author Tsitsi Dangarembga… What she does (making films and writing books) is directly linked with communication, creativity, self-expression, inspiration and the imagination. This is how she loves to express herself and all this is linked with what we Numerologists call Number 3 Energy. Because she’s made quite the name for herself and is famous to boot, we can deduce that along the way, she’s successfully managed (albeit it consciously or unconsciously) to leverage her core talents. Therefore, when we interrogate all the key data points listed in her above birth chart, we’d expect to find the number making its presence powerfully felt in one or more strategic places. And lo and behold it does, in three places…

Life Path Number, Shadow Personal Attainment Number, Shadow World Number

In her Life Path: Tsitsi Dangarembga has a number 3 [more specifically 21//3] life path (see the 3 circled in RED; TKS-LFP). This significance of this cannot be overemphasised. Understand this: people with a 3 Life Path are the most artistic in the bunch. They find ways of creating the most beautiful things in this world such as art, music, literature, etc. They breathe life into culture, and make it seem so simple because of their natural gift for expression. This explains why the entertainment industry is chock full of people having a number 3 Life Path. Typically, those with a 3 Life Path tend to enjoy life and all that they can get out of it. The extraverted 3’s love being in the spotlight and showing off their talent. The introverted 3’s will however lean more toward solitary creative pursuits that can garner them a following without being in the spotlight, such as an artist or writer.

In her Shadow Personal Attainment Number: see the 3 circled in PALE BLUE, bottom left corner, TSSPE. This means that her creating success around the number 3 will give her tremendous personal emotional satisfaction.

In her Shadow World / Career Number: see the BOLD WHITE number 3 within the green block, right side, WORLD. This mean that her creating success around the number 3 will give her tremendous professional emotional satisfaction.

The Pythagoras Square Birth Chart below reveals that she has the Arrow of Determination, running at Level 4 intensity [L4; see RED numbers; 1+1+2 = 4].

365 Pin Code Pythagorean Birth Chart of Tsitsi Dangarembga

The Arrow of Determination explained:

This is the most prolific arrow of the 20th century, so little wonder it was such a century of achievement. Determination underlies almost everything these people undertake. This is coupled with persistence, which is often used to overcome objections to their plans, sometimes to the point of dogged stubbornness. Some will want to enact their plans with haste; others will go to the extreme of waiting until obstacles disperse. The middle path, employing their intuition, compassion and wisdom, will generally be the most suitable avenue. One of the most difficult lessons for these people to accept is that not everything they determine is intended for them to do. Often, they will regard obstacles as inconvenient stumbling blocks that must be overcome whatever the costs.  Whereas, were they to use their intuition and wisdom, they would recognise that the obstacles exist in order to divert them into another more suitable course of action! This approach delivers less frustration and disappointment down the road. The decisiveness of people with this arrow is however a fine quality. The direction of motivation indicated by this arrow is generally toward idealism or ambition (hence the 9 is at its head). In the case of Tsitsi Dangarembga, note that there are 2 x 9’s. This indicates that the focus is on her ambition or idealism. Source: The Complete Book of Numerology by Dr David A. Phillips.

Your Expression number is one of your core numbers — the most important numbers in your Numerology chart. Based on the letters of your full name at birth, your Expression number reveals the talents, abilities, and shortcomings you hold in this lifetime. Why your name? Your name represents the inheritance of your personal history up to the moment of your birth. Whatever that history is, it has shaped you into what you are. Prior to meeting their child, parents use intuition as their guiding force, picking up on the child’s personal vibrations and choosing a name accordingly. The name you were given at birth is the name you were meant to have!

Expression number 7 explained

She is driven by a desire for truth and knowledge, gifted with an analytical mind and an enormous appetite for answers. She has a strong interest in exploring scientific matters, philosophy and mysticism. She requires time by herself, preferably outdoors in Nature, to recharge, but must guard against completely cutting herself off from others. She is often surprised by the lack of understanding or depth of knowledge of others, which can cause her to become critical, distant, and cynical about life in general. Nervous Conditions [published 1998]: Tsitsi Dangarembga Numerology

The above table of data reveals that:

Her 1998 Annual Experience Number is 16//7 (see the red and yellow arrow). This Number 7 Energy links with her Expression Number (70//7), her Hidden Passion Number (revealed as being 212% over target in Inclusion Table) and her Karmic Lesson. Also note that 1998 sees the start of a string of years (6 in total; 1998 to 2003) all of which are driven by karmic 16//7 bringing relationships and responsibility into frame. This period in turn, drives a powerful new beginning for her in 2004, with her Annual Experience Number in play for just that year being 10//1, which links directly to her Professional Attainment Number (TKSPR).

Let’s provide some strategic context, experience wise, around number sequence 16//7

Your desire for freedom and your impatience at restraints of any kind have brought on circumstances which may be very difficult to understand. Your subconscious is now urging you, through these calamities, to awaken the inner spiritual self, the real you. It is here, under extreme pressure, that a sudden bolt from the blue, an illuminating flash of insight, will lead the way to exoneration. If you are willing to learn freedom from dependence on the illusory material world, you will be awakened to deep truths within your soul. That’s the gift of the 16//7 numerology experience. It is a time when erroneous ideas and habits must be altered and for some, this change must be driven (via the unseen, yet perfectly just, universal forces) through most forceful means. As a result, there can be extreme losses and severe setbacks which might cause personal isolation. The 16//7 experience is not all bad though as it is coded to provide a recalibration experience, away from the rocks back into the open water. Again, remember, the nature of any number sequence experience is directly related to how the live has been lived. So, just as the 16//7 will usually bring about much destruction (because the life has not been well lived and therefore the person is merely reaping what they have sown) it too can it also bring about a period of tremendous reward and recognition, even fame! This would most likely be in the way of thought leadership and spiritual advancement and this 16//7 success would reveal that the life had been well lived up to that point.

It’s pretty amazing to think that both books, Nervous Conditions (1998) and This Mournable Body (2018) both had exactly the same Annual Experience Number in play for Tsitsi Dangarembga. This we believe is testimony to her phenomenal though leadership and spiritual awareness, both books being birthed if you will, during the karmic 16//7 number sequence.

Concluding remarks: Zimbabwean filmmaker and author Tsitsi Dangarembga

Not only was Nervous Conditions the first book written by a Black woman from Zimbabwe to be published in English, it was also awarded the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize in 1989 and was translated into many languages afterwards. In 2018, the novel was included on the BBC’s list of “100 stories that shaped the world,” landing between Salman Rushdie’s Midnight Children and Antoine de Saint-Exupery’s The Little Prince.

She is currently running a crowdfunding campaign to finance her feature project Nnenna, adapted from the novel Trapped in Oblivion by Ifeoma Theodore Jnr E, about a young girl discovering sexuality — a topic she can’t discuss with her mother.

In conclusion, we believe her 365 Pin Code Inclusion Chart says it all with her Number 7 score sitting at over 200% of target – she has and is, a beautiful mind. Her work may not be understood by all, however that she has left her mark on this world, is indisputable.
