Given that we at 365 Pin Code love to Analyse and Write About Success, and do so using nothing but numbers, with it being RWC2019, we curiously posed this question: What do Kitch Christie and Jake White have in common?
About Kitch Christie
Born in Johannesburg to a Scottish father and English mother, he was educated at Leith Academy in Edinburgh and the London Institute of Electronics. He picked up his lifelong nickname of “Kitch” from his fellow pupils, who named him after Don Kitchenbrand, a South African footballer with Rangers in the 1950s. George Moir Christie, better known as Kitch Christie (31 January 1940 – 22 April 1998), was a South African rugby union coach best known for coaching the country’s national team, the Springboks, to victory at the 1995 Rugby World Cup. He remained unbeaten during his tenure as Springbok rugby coach between 1994 and 1996, including leading the team to a then record 14 consecutive victories. In 2011, he was inducted posthumously into the IRB Hall of Fame, later subsumed into the World Rugby Hall of Fame, alongside all other Rugby World Cup-winning head coaches and captains through the 2007 edition.
When South Africa won the Rugby World Cup in 1995, many contributed to their triumph but a triumvirate stood out: there was the inspirational presence of the country’s president, Nelson Mandela, in a Springboks jersey, the leadership of the captain, Francois Pienaar, and the astute coaching of Kitch Christie.
Says 1995 Rugby World Cup winning coach Kitch Christie “I had the good fortune to coach two world-class teams: the World Cup- winning Springboks and the Transvaal side of 1993-94. Teams such as these are extremely rare. But what is it about them internally that enables them to perform so well? The first characteristic is vision. Teams must have something to believe in, something to achieve, but few have real vision. Visions must excite, engage and frighten. They must be big. It must be so big that even the most confident team member cannot feel sure of achieving it; so big that even the most cynical cannot shoot it down.”
“The second characteristic that distinguishes the great is ability. World- class teams will not be produced without a fair number of world-class players. Ability is important, but it is just as important for members of the team to complement each other.” He adds.
Christie goes on to say that “A third characteristic is “superior discontent”. World-class teams are highly analytical and self-critical. They feel there is always more that could have been done. The best teams I coached were for ever searching for the tiniest possible improvement.”
And he concludes with this wisdom “Another key element, of course, is discipline. To a top side it is as important as discipline to an army – it’s everything. Without it there is confusion and waste. True self-discipline is a quality shared by all the best players. It is important to realise that all behaviour, including the response in a split second to provocation, can be pre-determined.”
Tragically, Kitch Christie died on the 22nd of April 1998.
About Jake White
Jake White (born 13 December 1963 as Jacobus Westerduin) is a rugby union coach and former coach of the South African national team – the Springboks – whom he coached to victory in 2007 Rugby World Cup and the 2004 Tri Nations. White also coached the Under-21 Springbok side to victory in the Under-21 World Cup in 2002. On 24 October 2011, he was inducted into the IRB Hall of Fame, alongside other World Cup-winning head coaches and captains through the 2007 World Cup.
Says Jake White “As a professional coach, you’ve got to manage a staff that you often haven’t picked yourself, and sometimes that staff don’t think the same as you. In sport you need the people involved to have a bit of an ego, to rate themselves, to walk the line between confidence and arrogance, and that can create conflict when you’re not aligned. You may have a staff member on a long-term contract who is actually upset that he wasn’t given the head coaching role. So, you’ve got to manage that guy because he’s not in a positive frame of mind and may not always be trying to help you win.
“Then you‘ve got another guy who doesn’t really believe in what you’re trying to do, but you can’t get rid of him because the team can’t afford to pay him out. That’s why coaches fight so hard to have their own staff around. A coach also usually inherits a squad, with some guys that he might not have recruited. Sometimes the board hires a coach to come in and light a fire under players who are relaxing in a comfort zone. And with that, some players will fight you, and then you’ve got to get rid of them. That is never easy, and it seldom ends with a smile and a handshake. It is a dream to have done something that is recognised and appreciated, but it does come at great cost, and people don’t see how lonely coaching can be.”
